Aug 30 - finally, the sun

The sun came out at the end of the day, providing a nice ending to a dreary day.

I went fishing in the a.m. and got one bass; gave up around 9am getting tired of the drizzle and cold. Abby didn't complain even though she was wet; I did enough complaining for the both of us even though I was dry under my camo raincoat. I'll go out again this morning and hopefully add enough to the larder for a dinner.

We had lake fish for dinner though -- a feed of crappie and catfish from earlier days. Sandy is getting bored with our diet though -- fish from the lake; zucchini from the garden; potatoes from the garden; beans from the garden; occasionally broccoli from the garden; tomato salad from the ... you guessed it ... garden.

I planted some pumpkin plants on our overgrown septic bed sometime early summer. They are easy to find now, due to the orange flowers, but it's way to late for them to start developing pumpkins. No, the great pumpkin won't come to my lack-of-pumpkin patch. Sorry Charlie Brown.

It's foggy this morning. At 46F the air is much colder than the water. It's supposed to go up into the 60's though and I'll go for a bike ride. The rest of the week is consistent at 70 during the day, sunny, mid 50's overnight. That takes us to Labour Day and the official end of summer although it already feels over. Some of the leaves are turning in places -- no show of colour yet though. It has the look and feel of early Fall.

What else did I do yesterday ? Well, I took stock of some baseboard / trim work that I'm going to do in the basement. I have some painted baseboard and trim that needs to be pulled and replaced with wood that will be stained. There are also two pieces of baseboard that need to be cut for the bedroom. These date back to when I was doing the work and didn't have the doors yet -- couldn't run baseboard to the doors since that trim wasn't in place. Those two pieces in the bedroom will be painted white -- I'll paint those, and the baseboard for my darkroom at the same time. I'll likely pick up the required pieces of 1x4 and 1x6 in town late this week.

I did some cleanup in the barn. It was pleasantly cool; no bugs; good time for that. I now have a trailer full of stuff to go to the dump at some point. I also need to continue my cleanup in the garage.

There was one last bin, believe it or not, left from the packing of the cottage, still in the barn. It held a variety of things -- two Stonehenge mugs that Mom and Dad got in the UK; two more mugs -- Bud & October (Mom's birthday as well as Sandy's) -- I'll save all four. It also had a few books ... early National Geographic that my grandfather had bound, that are quite musty now and not worth keeping; other odds and ends -- "Four Days" -- an account of the JFK assassination -- and a few children's books. Also in there were piles of telephone cords, USB cables and the like -- mostly for the dump.

I watched the last episode of Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis. By the way that it ended, i.e. not with a cliff-hanger or "to be continued" -- it looks like it's over and they don't plan a new season. I'll have to google that. In a way ... whew ... if it is.

I had a snooze. I'm still not feeling great and still have a very sore throat. This one is hanging on for a long time. I expect that once I start exercising again, back on the bike, it will be chased away. The body revved up is better at fighting these things. So far Sandy has not come down with it. Hopefully she'll get lucky.

Onward. It's the first day of September. (correction, tomorrow is the first day of September !!). On the calendar there are still 21 days left in the summer, but don't believe that. Before September 21st, though, we'll be in Florida to get our own last gasp of summer. I'm looking forward to that.

The sun is trying to burn through the fog. It's calm ... yesterday it was windy and I anchored the boat out of the wind ... it's time to get organized and see if there are any bass out there.

That's it.
