Jan 13 - an anxious drive

Perhaps it was because it was the 13th, who knows. We got away around 6:15 and would have gotten to the cottage around 6:30 p.m. but we stopped for Swiss Chalet in Sudbury and instead got in a little after 7:30. The drive was easy, leaving us too much time to focus on what was happening in Toronto, perhaps ...

Stef called us before 9am to say that Aaron had had a bike/car accident and was heading to the hospital in an ambulance. Aaron had called her, so that was a good thing. He'd hit his head and had what he called "impact injuries" leaving everyone to wonder what that meant.

We spend an anxious several hours, not knowing until after 1pm, if I have my time correct, that he seemed ok and they were going to do a just-in-case CT Scan. That too turned out clean. He was being stitched up (facial cuts ... don't know any more details) and sent home, as far as we know.

Backing up a bit -- it was a while before Stef could find out what hospital he'd been sent too and then she was able to get hold of Aaron's Dad, John. John and JK (brother) were heading to the hospital; Stef was staying home since the girls were in school. The morning went by ... finally she heard from JK and she called us. I was about to call the hospital myself and see if I could get any information, or get word to John to give me a call. I'm sure that we'll hear more details today ... and get the full scoop on the weekend when we go to Oakville.

So ... for the morning, we didn't know if we'd be staying here last night. We had to pass by the cottage anyway and would have simply dropped off some bags to lighten the load, picked up some clean clothes and headed to Oakville, if Aaron had to stay in the hospital and Stef needed any help.

Whew.

Jim had turned up the heat to 60F so it was relatively toasty here compared to the norm. I unloaded the car first, including the skis out of the roof top ski box, then did my thing with the water, turning it on and running all the faucets, flushing all the toilets, then started a fire. Abby got some exercise running around outside in the snow ... we all turned in around 10pm.

There is not a lot of snow, although there appears to be about 6-8" on the lake. I'll be going out shortly and setting up my ice fishing rigs -- yes, my minnows are still alive in the storage bin in the basement. Dark and cool does the trick, I guess. These minnows from the swamp don't require as much oxygen as shiners from running water.

That's about it. Oh -- on the way in on 522, just before Key River, we had to wait for three bull moose on the road. We've been looking at moose crossing signs for weeks and only see them here. Elk, moose, wolves, big horn sheep ... I think that's the sum total of the wildlife that we saw on this trip. The trip is not over though. We won't even completely unpack since we're leaving on Sunday. A brief lay-by is all that we're doing here.

Sandy called Bonnie after we arrived last night to tell her that the neighbours were home. I'm sure that we'll see them today.

That's it for now. I'll go into town later, in spite of the light freezing rain, I expect ... or perhaps not until tomorrow if it's too messy.

Onward ... time to get the fishing rigs in place, the car in the barn and that ski box off the roof. I spent the last while catching up on some online banking.
