Jan 23 - on the land

Sandy, Kim and Meagan were the ones running around yesterday. First off they went to the Saturday market, picking up some food for dinner, an orchid for the window and fish at OceanS Seafood on the way home. Then they had an early lunch and headed off to Daytona for Bed Bath and Beyond. Kim bought three knives to add to the set; Sandy got a better potato masher -- those were the highlights -- plus some odds and ends. They weren't home until late in the day.

David went for a spin on the Harley, short in the morning just to get his bike-legs back, then longer in the afternoon. I had a ride in-between his ... it's too bad that we didn't plan better and rent a bike for the day and we could have gone out together. Once Kim was home, the two of them went out (yes, I have pictures to post) getting back around 6pm. They went into the park, saw lots of armadillos, and just generally explored the area.

For dinner we had tilefish & Sandy's smashed potatoes plus broccoli. Sandy did her tuna tartar as our salad / appetizer -- it was great as usual. Today's plan is to eat at the club and then tomorrow we'll be back at the house.

All in all it was a great day to be alive, better than the alternative !

I had talked to Doris Guymon on Friday and she was sounding much better, recovering from the second round of chemo. Yesterday I talked to Wayne on another couple of topics -- no, their Grandma plant had died; I gave him some advice on getting info off the hard drive of his ailing computer and a couple of other things. The good thing about this electronic age is that your friends can be around the country or around the world and you can stay current. I never would have had the patience to write letters in the "olden days". Besides, no one could read my writing !

We sat at the table chatting for quite a while yesterday. David and Kim told us the evening before that they are thinking of moving to Ontario, which is something that they have toyed with before but now they are REALLY talking about it. That, however, was not the topic of conversation last night. In fact, just to drag this on, I don't remember what the topics of conversation were ! Oh yes -- I remember one -- Abby -- from Alpha to wuss -- all of her psychological problems due to her siblings being removed from the litter at 6 weeks; her being the runt; -- poor girl was despondent as we talked about her in the third person (or is that third dog ?).

We've spent more "quality time" with David over the past few weeks than over the past ten years. I'm calling it quality time only in that it's small group vs large group. Over the years we tend to see David only when everyone else is around -- Christmas and Summer -- and it's not the same as spending time one-on-one or two-on-two, as it were. Due to proximity we've spent more time with Stef and Aaron. When we were in Radnor we usually had Sunday dinners together and Stef has spent a lot of time with us. Jeffrey was there too, but at that point he had not left home. Jeffrey has now moved from being the kid brother, the child of the family, to being a man. If David moves to Ontario, Jeffrey will be the furthest away but at least they are all within driving distance ... not that Edmonton isn't within driving distance ... but we won't do that too often !

Anyway, I'm off to church soon and then we're supposed to go fishing. At least that's the plan. I have not checked the weather yet. Best get to that ...

Oh -- I exchanged emails with Frank Tetz regarding their time in Florida. We're now expecting to see them on the Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday after Jason leaves in March. I also talked to Jerry, my biking buddy -- he's thinking of coming the weekend of February 26. The calendar is filling up ... all the more fun.

Onward !

Dave, So sorry about the variegated Impatient. Had I remembered it was an heirloom plant, I might have spent more time trying to keep a bit of it alive. We have another grandma plant, a Hoya (or Waxleaf) which a neighbor gave us when he moved to Washington state. It is not nearly as nice as your plant was, but since we remembered that we were guarding this genetic material in case he lost his own plant, it is still alive and thriving. No doubt I just jinxed it and it will die tomorrow. Always good to talk to you. I'll let you know how the file transfer works.

Ah well, I shouldn't attach so much importance to a plant. Perhaps I will take you up on finding an equivalent plant to replace this one. it was getting harder and harder to keep it going anyway.
