Dec 21 - the satellite soap opera

Well, try as we might, we couldn't get any improvement in the signal.  The weather was cloudy/foggy/drizzly and I suspect that it was much the same at the other end, what with snow storms hitting the midwest.

I had expected Tom and Susan to show up with some fancy equipment but instead they showed up with two wrenches.  I could have done what they did, i.e. moving from side-to-side and up and down trying to maximize the signal.  I paid them the agreed-upon amount, because they'd made their "house call" (my words, not theirs), but quite frankly if I had been called to someone's house and couldn't do anything, I'd have cut my price / only gotten paid for gas etc.

I guess it's like the appliance repair man, not always able to fix your problem but you pay for their time just the same.  I'm not sure why this should be any different -- perhaps because I'd specifically asked Tom whether he had any special equipment to help aim the dish.  As it was, Tom stood around smoking while Susan was the wench with the wrench :).

I stood up there with my laptop reading off the signal strength.

Right now I'm up and down again.  I'd hit 45/46 last night but am now in the low 30's.  It was better an hour ago, must be the a.m. blues.  Perhaps the dish needs a cup of coffee to get going ?

I did pickup the tree.  Sandy did go to Parry Sound.  I'll post a picture of the tree "on" the ATC trailer at some point.  With the trailer less than 4' long and the tree 18'+ long, it made quite a sight.

That was pretty much it for the day; no other special projects.  I did get on the trainer for a while and after that, on the elliptical.  I found a way to use the machine that works for me, basically jogging on it.  As usual I made a couple of trips down with firewood, again tapping into the woodshed as opposed to the wood box.

I need a clear sky and I'll get up there and do some satellite aiming myself, charge myself out to myself for a pretty penny !

Onward.

oh -- and I'm typing this into an email-to-blog because I am not getting any response from blogger because my internet connection is the pits.
