I dawdled but finally got out riding. It gets harder all the time to keep warm as I get older, or so it seems. It used to be that temps in the mid 50's and up were fine for short sleeves or at least a thin long sleeved jersey by itself. Now I'm riding with two jerseys and a wind vest and full fingered gloves. I swapped gloves and stowed the vest at the turnaround point where I had some of the wind with me.
I also find that my cadence has increased over time and I stand less often. I roll along at 90+ for long stretches. I remember when I first started using the compact crankset that I'd run out of gears, but no more. Even when rolling along at 20+ mph yesterday, I was only mid-way through my 12-27 cassette.
These last two rides have been with the Hummer, since it provides stow space with the rack and pack. I'm using the Mavic Heliums, complete with Grand Bois tires, 28 in the rear and 25 on the front, if I recall correctly.
Before going for my ride, I went to Mass and then puttered around the house. After getting back, we walked over to the SYC and had a drink but no food. With the cold, the Tiki is pretty deserted. We thought that Rose and Jessica deserved some company :).
Sandy had picked up wild steelhead salmon for dinner which was ok, but relatively flavorless. Perhaps it was too fresh ? No, but salmon, especially the darker varieties, are drier and have a stronger flavor -- not a fishy flavor -- hard to explain. Now that I think about it, we had the same experience with the beef fillet steaks at the cottage.
... and that was it for another day.
Today ... over with Christie very shortly and then who knows. It's warmer this a.m. -- says 57 out the back -- make that MUCH WARMER.
Onward !
