Not much happened on the reno front yesterday. I did, however get in a bike ride !
Judith Longley met me at the house around 8:30 and we were riding by 9am. Sandy arrived before we left, so she also got to see Abby.
It was a great day for a ride. The wind was really gusty in the morning before we rode, so I thought that we were going to have a struggle heading north, but not so. It was cloudy and misty as we got to Flagler Beach and it looked like we were going to get wet, but not so. The tail-wind stuck with us all the way south so we mostly cruised at 20+ mph. The sun never stayed completely out so it wasn't as hot as expected - a perfect day overall !
Home before 3pm, I started looking at the plumbing. It's going to be difficult getting all the connections into place, all the necessary valves, T's, the hot water heater, food disposer and the drains. Unfortunately most work will have to wait until the cabinet is in place but what won't wait is the plumbing that has to be above the tiles but under the kick box. I have to ensure that is leakproof before it's covered by the cabinet. What I really need under-cabinet is a small manifold for hot and cold.
Hot from the wall has to feed the heater, T'd with the cold from the wall and controlled by a valve. Hot from the heater, or bypass, has to feed the dishwasher, sink and island. Cold has to feed the heater, T'd with the hot from the wall and controlled by a valve. It also has to feed the sink, island and fridge. All this makes for many T's and valves. The drain side is also bulky with the disposer, two sink drains, dishwasher AND the pressure relief from the hot water heater. Add all the electrical connections under there for disposer, dishwasher (both by code are plug and receptacle) as well as heater. It remains to be seen whether I add a switch for the heater or simply unplug it when we go away. I like the switch approach, but don't know if we'll have room for the extra surface box.
I studied it for a while, drew some diagrams, then went to Home Depot and bought a couple of bags of parts. Even as I think about this, I realize that I should have bought a couple more parts -- shark bites -- that would make it easier to pressure-test the under-cabinet stuff and then disconnect. Oh well. I'll be back at HD at 7am, I guess !
After Sandy had left the house but before I returned, a pallet of plaster had arrived. I didn't want to leave that sitting outside so I moved about 16x50 pound bags into the house. I needed some exercise anyway. I must have done a good job with this because my back isn't sore this a.m.
The gang is back this a.m. to finish up some minor bits of drywall and remove the 3' of wall at the top of the stairs. The plasterer will be working today, starting with the kitchen. When should I break the news that the electricians forgot one wire for under-cabinet lighting ? Perhaps I'll simply deal with that next week, punch a hole in the newly-finished drywall and add that wire to the switch. Sigh.
What else ? I don't know. It's going to be a busy day. I should also do some prep for the 1000k that starts Saturday a.m., pack some clothes etc. I'll be carrying everything with me; that's easier when the weather is supposed to be warm, even overnight. The wind will be from the north, which means that the third day will be tough riding up the coast, same as 2010. SPOT will be on, as usual.
Onward ?
