Yes, but I didn't catch any fish. I did lose some minnows, so they're out there. Perhaps today I'll be luckier !
I walked across the lake with my trusty DeWalt drill and a long auger bit. We've got 6-7 inches of ice all the way across -- enough to drive a car ! -- but I won't be driving a car. There's snow on top, perhaps 6-8 inches, less in places, which weighs the ice down and produces some slush at the shore. If we want to do any skating we will need to shovel an area of ice.
Later in the day, Sandy and I walked across and picked out a tree. For the first time in a few years we'll be able to bring it across the lake. Two years ago we got the tree just into Smith's Bay, since I didn't trust walking across. Last year the ice was so-so in the middle and we found one off a bush road past the dump on 522.
Abby is having a blast. She was racing along, bounding in the snow, as she joined in on both walks across the lake. With her nose in the snow, she's finding something that we don't. It was in the mid 20's F yesterday, thus her feet weren't getting quite as cold. She still gets snow packed between her toes which she worries at from time to time, but mostly she ignores it.
I put the new bike together and took it out on the ice --
My Pearl Izumi orange wind jacket didn't quite match the blaze orange hunting toque, but what the heck.
Riding in this much snow didn't work. Once I had some packed, however, I was able to make headway. I took the bike up to Osprey Road and went down past Ernie's and back. I was drenched with sweat ! That thing is a bear to ride ! What a workout !
The plow went by on the road earlier today so it will be easier riding. I'll get out again.
Today ... not sure. We're going to hold off actually cutting the tree until the weekend, perhaps, since no one will be here except us for a few days.
Onward !
