We waited until the rain & snow abated and headed down the lake to where Jim had suggested we try -- Portage Lake. We'd been there before, but didn't know its name. The walk is not long into the lake; the foliage is dense along the shore; we found spots along the surrounding ridge.
It dripped like crazy from the trees as the snow melted. My jacket kept my upper body relatively dry but due to being so bundled up, my lower half felt very damp. That's what comes from wearing non-breathing vinyl pants, I guess. After a while I discovered that there was no rain coming down and it was drier standing in the open than sitting under the trees. I stood.
We'd arrived before 10am; left before noon. A while after we arrived the action started -- much shooting in the distance -- so SOMEONE was seeing SOMETHING -- not us. Cold and wet, we headed back.
We had a snack, since we'd already eaten our lunch while we watched for deer, watched some TV and then late in the afternoon went across the lake, staying there until dusk. Can there be more of nothing ? We found it. Alex got chilled as the wind picked up and blew in his face. I was on the other side of the ridge and sheltered. We crossed back to the cottage in high winds and blowing snow. Are we having fun yet ?
Today the internet shows -4C. That agrees with the indoor/outdoor thermometer. We may try Portage Lake again ... we may simply go behind the cottage. That decision is still pending.
