Oct 31 - another one down

... with H1N1. We heard from David & Kim last night that Meagan has a cough and a temperature. We're crossing our fingers that it gets no worse. That's two out of three families already hit by the thing ... or two out of four if you count Sandy and me. We cannot get much more far flung, which goes to show you how it has spread.

It's hitting us before any of us even have a chance to get the vaccine. Stef is not planning on getting it but that might be a moot point at this rate since it's not readily available anyway. I'm in the camp that a sore arm for a couple of days is much better than even the smallest chance of being sick for several, so if Sandy and I have not already been hit by the time it's available in Florida, we'll get the vaccine.

By the end of the day yesterday the wind was blowing itself out. There was a tree down across Osprey road when I went into town -- someone had broken off some branches at the end to create car passage. I had planned on cleaning it up when I got back, going over with the chainsaw, but someone beat me to it.

My trip into town took me to the ATM in Port Loring, Argyle Sports in Arnstein for pepperettes, Buchanan's Garage for my deer license and the General Store for mail, Toronto Star and stove-top stuffing. Abby came along for the ride.

It was as windy as I've ever seen it here. There were not only whitecaps on the lake but swells, reminding me of the ocean. Blowing from right to left, we are mostly sheltered. As it got dark last evening the sky was clearing. We could see the almost-full moon. If kids were lucky enough to have clear skies it would have been a great night for trick-or-treating. Great that is, for every kid who was not sick like Meagan, who was really disappointed that she couldn't go out.

I checked Jason's tree with the guy wires and it was ok. You could see the effect of the wind though, one cable was hanging almost slack. I didn't see any other trees down, but then other than my trip into town earlier in the day neither of us went anywhere.

I had left a message for Jim and Bonnie when we got back on Friday but have not heard back from them. I'm guessing that they went down to Pam's for Halloween, although I know that was not their original plan. Someone is in at the cottage five doors down towards 522 ... I don't know their names but we've also seen them up in the winter cross country skiing on the lake.

We saw some other traffic on the lake yesterday, people going into their hunt camps getting ready for deer season that starts tomorrow. It was not as busy as usual though. I expect that some people waited and we'll see more action today. It's supposed to be partly cloudy, colder than yesterday but dry and calm.

I'll be going down to Britt for 10:30 Mass. Alex should arrive shortly after I get home and we'll probably check out the ATC trails out the back, ensuring passage. We might also go fishing. I did some tune-up work on the 3-wheeler yesterday, running carburetor cleaner through it and spraying the ignition wires with silicone. It was running well afterwards. Hopefully it behaves itself over the next week. It has one leaky tire than deflates over the span of a couple of weeks ...

Alex is bringing a ham today and Sandy will be cooking ham, scalloped potatoes etc. which is one of my favorite non-fish meals. My grandmother and mother also made that meal for me so it's something special. The leftover ham will be our lunch meat this week. Other than that, we'll be cleaning up the freezer as much as possible before we go south. Last night we had some veal sausages; the night before we had pike ... Sandy is determined to clean it out. We need room for deer after all ! Ha ! I know that there is little chance of that !

I spent a couple of hours yesterday going through old personal papers -- bills etc. that had stacked up ready for filing. At the same time I went through some of those files, extricating stuff that I'll never need. I ended up with a pile of stuff about 18" high with too much personal information to leave at the dump, so I took advantage of Jason's burn barrel, standing over it and feeding paper into it a couple of sheets at a time.

I just realized that it's 5:57 not 6:57. Standard time is upon us. It's going to be a long morning. We had not reset any clocks before we went to bed. Thank goodness for computers ... it "knows" the correct time. Otherwise I'd have been to Mass an hour early. I was tempted to go to Mass yesterday afternoon in Sudbury but without any other errands to do it would have been 3 hours of driving for a 45 minute Mass, vs 1 hour of driving to Britt today. The reason that I was toying with the idea of going yesterday is that today the weather is supposed to be good -- I can see the stars and the gradually lightening sky.

Arlene is planning on visiting us in Florida mid February. She has another training session, this time in Maitland, which is an Orlando suburb, so she'll be close. The session ends on Thursday so she'll come to our place and then leave on Sunday.

The blog schedule is reasonably up-to-date. If anyone spots any issues, let me know.

My Mom's next oldest brother Vic's son Ron had a son who goes by JJ who visited my Mom and Dad in Florida a few times and became quite close. He named his daughter Lily after my Mom. Sue, Ron's sister, recently sent me a link to a photographer's blog which had a picture of Lily ...

That's all that I can think of.

Onward.
