Aug 27 - off to Switzerland !

The great thing about not having a travel plan is that you can decide where you're going on the spur of the moment. The bad thing about not having a travel plan is that you can get stuck looking for a hotel room ... yesterday was a perfect example of both.

Sandy said it -- the best thing about Geneva was the drive here ... but that's because neither of us was interested in shopping; neither of us wanted a new watch; both of us are more interested in small towns on this trip rather than big cities.

It was a beautiful drive here. Staying off the highways again we wandered through little towns, found a restaurant for lunch, drove through the forests and voila ... here's the border with Switzerland. An officer was standing out in front of the booths and waving most people on; he cast us an inquiring look due to the amount of luggage and we said "touring" and he waived us on. There was no passport check, although we had them in our hands. This is what happens when you stay within the EU.

In Geneva we wandered along the waterfront and into shopping areas and then found a place for dinner. Everything is very expensive, but we expected that.

Today we will head back into France, aiming for Dinge Les Bains rather than closer to the coast and running into full hotels. Part of our problem yesterday was that it was a) Saturday night and b) there's some music festival going on this weekend. After Dinge, we'll go down to Cannes and along the Mediterranean into Monaco and then into Italy. See ... we do have a rough plan ...

It was cooler in the mountains, of course, the temperature in the low teens Celsius. In Geneva it was 20C and we expect quite warm -- back into shorts -- once we get to the Med. It rained on and off yesterday after we left our overnight spot and cleared as we headed down to Geneva.

Mass this a.m. before we head off ...

Onward !
