Feb 23 - thermostat

I had a go at replacing the thermostat on the M5 but didn't complete the task.

The first puzzle was removing the engine cover, or at least what looks like an engine cover but is really a cover for the air distribution system.  Under that there are 8 tubes that ensure that each cylinder has exactly the same resistance to incoming combustion air.  Then the two hoses must be removed that lead to the dual Mass Airflow thingy's and from there, the two air filters.

There are a number of very stiff either cables or tubes attached to a piece that is bolted to the top of the thermostat housing.  Unlike the old X5 and Sandy's car, the thermostat and housing don't come as a separate unit.  However, the housing must be removed to replace the thermostat.  It has two hoses coming from the radiator and three places where it "plugs" into the block, with o-rings to stop leakage.

Ideally I would drain some of the radiator coolant but the underside of the engine is completely covered with multiple plastic panels.  I couldn't determine for sure whether I'd be able to get those off easily without removing all of them and, even though I had both sides of the car jacked up, there's still not much space to work.  This would be a lot easier on a hoist.

I considered simply removing the radiator hoses, spilling some coolant, and then replenishing.  That's not a big deal but would likely make a considerable mess.  I tried loosening one of those stiff cables/hoses and found that there was oil, so I'm not sure what the heck those things are doing.

I decided that I have to do some more investigation in DIY's online before going any further and put this all back together.  An alternative, I know, is to simply take it to a shop.  I know. I know.  One of these times I'm going to get myself in trouble and have to have a car moved to a shop with a flatbed !

I really didn't do much else.  We actually watched some hockey -- not a lot, but some.  Exciting.  I puttered with my bike but there's more to do on that score, cleaning etc.

Today -- dermatologist appointment late morning and then Ron and Nancy arrive in the afternoon.

Onward !

ps -- received some sad news.  My cousin Sue's husband Bill passed away last night.  Our thoughts are with Sue, Chris and family.
