Apr 17 - remote control

The remote control thermostat was dead-easy to install.  I need to do some testing to see what happens if the router / modem / thermostat go down with power outages (will they all reconnect), but I'm satisfied at this point that I should do the other two thermostats.  I can "see" the temperature, modify (temporarily) and also adjust the schedule.  That's exactly what I was looking for.

I rode, north to Flagler Beach, thought that I might hit rain but didn't.  Today won't be quite as good -- massive rain headed this way.  I'm glad that I went yesterday !  Don't put off 'till tomorrow ... as they say.

We had tuna for dinner + quinoa beans.  Good.

Prior to dinner some packages arrived -- new front wheel from Peter White, including generator hub.  Now I've got to mount a tire, which will likely come from the existing front wheel.  In a separate package from Peter were a new rim and spokes for the existing wheel.  I need to rebuild that one; we'll see how that goes.  I just may ask Aaron for a favor ...he's at least 1000% better than I am at this.

Today is DKM day ... the first of the gang arrives this evening.  I might head to Costco to pick up those thermostats -- the thing about Costco is that you cannot count on something being in stock on day 2.

Oh yes, another package that arrived yesterday was the Performance Bike package with two pairs of cycling shoes.  These are running-shoes-style, sizes 44 and 45.  I wasn't sure which would fit and will take the other pair back to PB in Winter Park.  So far it looks like the 44 is the best fit.  Shoes are a real problem for me.  Perhaps I ride too much ?  The new cycling shoes really need the toe box stretched a little on the right foot.  Sideways stretch that is, or perhaps upwards ?  I've been alternating.  It will be interesting to try a pair of cycling shoes with laces !

I've got over 6,000 km on the RUSA results page so far this year, once the 600k from last weekend is entered by John Preston.   I'm not sure how that compares to 2013; not sure that it matters.

I tried backing up the VMWare Win 7 environment yesterday was was getting an error from Linux "error splicing file", which is causing me some angst.  The file is quite large, 45gb or so.  I tried to copy it to a couple of destinations, not sure if the issue is reading or writing.  I was able to Tar it without problems, however, and then un-Tar, so perhaps I'm ok.  I've now setup my regular backup and will have to then test one of those backup files to see if I can launch W7 from a backup.

Onward ??  Not sure what our schedule will be with the gang; we'll be playing that by ear.
