It turned out that the easiest chore of the day was swapping the winter/all-season tires on the X5. They're now stored in the 4x6 trailer at the side of the house, out of the way for now. When we leave in the spring, they will be moved into the garage, at least that's the plan.
We then wasted some time by going to the Verizon store to activate Sandy's new phone. Why ? Because they can do that from the 800 number. Why more ? Because they don't backup/restore, you do that yourself.
I basically spent the rest of the day doing just that, trying to get the devices in sync with little success. iTunes is the vehicle for backup/restore although you can also use iCloud, but from all the Googling that I did, iTunes is easier. If I was only doing the phone, that would have been easy but I was also trying to get all of her pictures in synch ... and that didn't happen. I did get all the pictures copied over to the pc but all of her folder information was lost in the process -- not on the phone, but on the iPad.
Notes to self:
1) when doing this in the future, first activate the new device, then bring ios up to the latest release.
2) backup old device to iTunes
3) restore old device info to new device
App information only transfers properly if both the old device and new device are on the same release of ios.
That still doesn't leave the iPhone and iPad pictures in synch, but they weren't before. iCloud is supposed to do that but it doesn't.
Right now her new phone is active and old phone is ready to sell -- anyone want a 4s ? Most of the apps came over with the 2nd restore, once I had ios up to date on the new phone. The pictures are the same as they were on the old phone.
The new iPad has the pictures loaded from both the old iPad and the old iPhone, but they're a mess, all folder information lost. I think that we'll have another go at that, backing up the old iPad and restoring to the new. iTunes is supposed to synch across devices, but will only do that if the info is on the pc ... which it isn't. If I could get the folder info over to the pc ...
This reminds me of ... ahem ... days spent reloading earlier versions of Windows. Now that's quite an insult to Apple, I realize, but there you have it.
Sandy picked up pork chops for dinner, which were great.
Today, perhaps, on the bike. It looks like it will be similar to Monday, i.e. windy and from the north.
I just signed up for a 200k in Jupiter on the weekend, my first brevet of the year. It looks like it might be wet. C'est la vie.
Onward !
