Jun 21 - not a brick

Dang Windows; dang Windows 8.1 in particular.

I did some research, using my phone, naturally, since my laptop wouldn't connect.  Using my iPhone (get it, Apple works, MSFT doesn't ?).  There were lots of people complaining / stuck with the 8.1 update that messed up their wifi.  I was not alone.  I have an Intel adapter in this laptop.  By the way, I like the hardware ...

The only solution, other than reverting back to 8.0, seemed to be to get an updated driver for the wifi adapter, from the manufacturer, not from MSFT.  Of course to do that, I'd need another machine.  Once Jim was up, I used his laptop to download an updated driver for try number one.  I copied that to SD card and then moved it to my laptop and ran it ... it hung ... the install hung.  Undaunted, I tried the bulky version with extra software, not just the drivers, and bingo, I was up and running again.

I should probably turn off auto-update for our trip to Europe.  First off, I don't want to do the downloads, and secondly, don't want to get hung up without another machine to get connected.  I should also carry the dongle for wired connections and a short cat5 cord ...

... then again, linux might be best ?  Or, I could simply have linux on an SD card to have an alternate bootup ?  That's not a bad idea either. Slow but effective.  To do that, I should probably pickup a larger capacity SD card.  The biggest I have now is 32gb.

The weather turned out much better than predicted.  The majority of the rain was southeast of us and had mostly cleared before noon.  Emma got in a bunch of time in the pool.  Sandy got semi-burnt sitting outside.  I was in and out, can't stand sitting in the sun very long.  I'll ride in the sun but not sit.

Emma practiced her diving, getting to the no-flop point, and her jumping, making big splashes.

We went to the Hemmingford Golf Club for dinner.  They had a special Father's Day buffet with roast beef etc., very good.  For me on this low carb diet, it was much better than the usual Sunday night pasta dinner !

How many deviled eggs can one kid eat ?  This is the kid who lives on a diet of mac-n-cheese, hot dogs (without the bun), strawberries, some yogurt, orange cheddar cheese (must be orange), and little else.  No veggies. Whole lactose-free milk and watered down apple juice.  Apple slices sometimes.  French toast, when we're around, well, when Sandy is around.  We'll have to make deviled eggs for her.  Omega 3.

Today's agenda includes bike for me and Parc Safari for Emma, Sandy and Sheryl.  Jim will get a much needed break from all of us :).

Onward !
