Aaron gave me a new router to try and I fiddled with it yesterday, placing it downstream of everything else and then this a.m. early on, I put it in place of the linksys router. The Fortigate 60d router is commercial grade, whew ! options galore. I think that one table said that it can support 500,000 tcp sessions ... so that should be the end of devices hanging when we have a crowd here and next door ! Of course I then have to consider putting the same unit in Florida, except that I see it priced between $500 and $1,000 depending on options chosen ... hmmm ... likely not !
We did get some rain yesterday, but just light, nothing heavy. I see from the Doppler that there's BIG rain on the way now, so perhaps finally we'll get something that might affect the lake level; we'll see.
Sandy did go to Parry Sound and was back mid afternoon. Even though PS is about the same distance as Sudbury, it's quick because you don't spend a lot of time driving through the city. Sudbury is a bear to get around, but of course it does have more shopping options, with a REAL Home Depot vs the mini one in PS, a Costco etc. etc.
I did go out in the light rain and clean the gutters, mostly, enough so that we won't have water pouring over the front if we do get big rain. It was a quickie job though; I do have to go to the upper roof and do the same thing and will have to do the lower gutters a couple of times. This is when we're getting lots of droppings from the Hemlocks and the big pine tree and all that fills the gutters pretty quickly.
I didn't do any more bike work but probably should at one point.
I did do some research into Golden puppies, but no conclusions there either. The pricing is interesting -- from just under $1,000 for a home raised puppy litter to $1,500 for what I'd call more rigor (registered, shots etc.), to $3,000 from any of the show dog breeders, even if you're not showing the dog; $5,000 if a few months old and trained; $15,000 if a year or two old and trained as a service dog. One show dog place said that they had two females available later in October but as I was trying to setup a time to see them, they came back and said that others in queue had finalized. Many of those breeders have long wait lists, it seems.
We simply want a healthy family dog.
It was Zoe's birthday yesterday and we tried Facetime but they couldn't see us at their end. It would be interesting to try again now that the Fortigate is in place; it should provide better latency but of course much depends on the satellite connection. Heck, this modem even allows for two WAN connections ... but no, I'm not putting in a second dish !
We had lake trout for dinner last night and green beans from the Parry Sound market.
Onward ? As soon as I hit "publish" I'll think of something else ...
