Off we go again, but not before we watched the Vuelta go by. A cavalcade of support vehicles, official vehicles, ambulances before and after the riders doesn't even count the team buses and other support that won't actually drive the cycling route. By the time they got to us, perhaps 5-6 kms into the race, they were still mostly on parade, not racing yet. Riders were interspersed with team cars, talking, getting organized for another day on the road. It was a climbing day but I don't know how much climbing, didn't check out the stage profile in detail. They'd be saving their energy for later.
I took probably a hundred pictures, as fast as it would refocus and snap. I'll look at them later.
Before the race went by, however, we were reminded that when your day has come, don't expect that you can avoid it. Standing by the side of the road, a cell phone hit the ground close to Sandy, dropped by a spectator eight floors up in the apartment building who was getting himself prepped for taking pictures. It hit a planting bed of sorts and wasn't even damaged. That wouldn't have been the case had it hit Sandy. Killed by a cell phone might even make the news, but we don't want our 15 minutes of fame that way ! Nope !
We opted to pay the tolls and the drive was quick, getting to our little cottage in the town 15 minutes from St. Emillion around 4:30. An English couple run the B&B; it is exquisite. They've been renovating for 7-8 years, apparently, having retired from somewhere in England. It's delightful. I need to take some pictures ... but ...
They booked a restaurant in StE for us and we headed in for dinner. A nice Grand Cru, a great dinner ... what more could you ask for ? Well, I could ask that I sleep the night without being up every half hour. It was a tough night. Our hostess had some imodium, which I've now taken. I hope this stuff works well and quickly. Our plan is to go into StE at 10 am for 10:30 Mass (me) and wander (Sandy). It remains to be seen whether I can manage that. I'd hate to waste the day sitting here at our cottage not too far from a toilet ...
Anyway, enough of that, hopefully this will work out and my insides will settle down. Right now I'm dehydrated and low on electrolytes. Stupid me, I didn't bring any of my electrolyte tablets, thinking that it would be a cool ride and I wouldn't need them, never dreaming that they'd be necessary AFTER the ride.
Sunday. Tomorrow to Meaux. Tuesday to Montreal. I guess that this adventure is just about over but I need to ensure that the adventure doesn't have an segment with me in a hospital !
Onward ! Please !
