In Canada, May two-four is the popular name for the Victoria Day weekend celebrated in most provinces, notably not Quebec. I guess that the French don't want to acknowledge an English Queen. Instead they celebrate St. Jean Baptiste on a different weekend.
The weekend has wound up. Barry, Kyle, Gavin & Amanda have all left along with Noodles and Peaches. From our house, David and Vanda left after an early dinner. We're down to the hard core. Later today Jason, Lorraine and Kim will leave, taking Chili. Now we're talking really hard core -- what will Cassie think ? Just wait until I head to Barrie for my bike rides ...
I dismantled the coffee roaster at dinner time yesterday. It's not heating up properly. As I suspected, one of the temperature sensors has died so the heater doesn't run enough. At best it reaches 430F when it's supposed to hit 480F. That makes a huge difference. After reassembling having removed a lot of dust, I did a batch and instead of it taking 18-20 minutes, it ran for almost an hour. I have no idea what those beans will taste like.
I exchanged emails with a Gene Cafe rep yesterday who pointed me at checking the resistance of the temperature sensors. I'll order a new part today but it will take some time to get here; undecided whether I should send it to Reading, Loring or Barrie. It's only a $10 part but no doubt it will cost twice that much in shipping charges.
Speaking of shipping, the compression plug for the new fork should be arriving in the mail one of these days. I'll check in town later today, I think. The Invisible Fence for Cassie will likely arrive tomorrow ... I'd expect that to be delivered to Buchanan's via Purolater. I will check with them as I swing through. I might do a Rye Road drive to see what kind of shape it's in for our 600k ride next week ...
I fussed a bit more with the Merc 25 yesterday, with no luck. Late in the day I realized that Jason's motor on the little boat has the same configuration, so I will take a look under the cowl to see how it works.
I may mount it on the little boat anyway, see if it runs. If it does, I'll load it onto the Whaler trailer and take it into town that way; more convenient anyway in many ways. If I decide to do that, I should do it this a.m. while Jason is still around.
I did go for a bike ride. The black flies aren't nearly as bad as they were a few days ago, not in the driveway, Narrows parking lot or riding on the road. However, the mosquitoes have arrived. On the 22nd, sitting in the gazebo in the evening, the black flies probably outnumbered the mosquitoes 100 to 1. Last night their numbers were almost reversed; I'm guessing 50 to 1 for the mosquitoes. That's a lot of blood sucking being held at bay by the gazebo screen ! Now we shall see if my expensive mosquito catcher makes any difference.
