Nov 26 - Rottnest

Kylie had Rottnest island on her bucket list and everyone concurred.  The three of us set out for the ferry from Fremantle, biked around the island on 7-speed machines that didn't really fit, had lunch and returned.  It's a fast ferry half-hour ride away on BIG ferries with lots of people.  The local marsupials are everywhere as are the people taking pictures of them !
Here's a description -- The island of Rottnest near Perth, Australia is the primary home of the quokka, a type of marsupial. Quokkas have round, compact bodies that are 40-54 cm (16-21 in.) in length. They are covered with short, coarse brown-grey fur and have small rounded ears and a black nose.
They look like overgrown squirrels, perhaps, except that their bodies are stockier at the rear and they hop.  While we were having our late lunch there were a couple checking for any dropped food.  They're fairly used to people unless you pay attention to them at which point they might just hop away.
While the quokkas were interesting, to me the real attraction was the scenery, pretty beaches, turquoise water, arid land with wind-blown trees.  It was a good day.

Back with the Kav's, Annie had made some really creative salads, quite a treat, along with beef.  We hardly made a dent in the hearty salads.
