As expected, the Mackinac Bridge was closed when I got there around 10:30. Also as expected, it opened at noon despite the 12:30 advertised re-open time. I had figured that they were giving themselves some leeway. I caught up on email, wandered around a little and whiled away the time. The entire time was involved in the festival, crowds of people everywhere. I was parked in a lot very close to I75 just south of the bridge. The way north into town and the I75 on-ramp was blocked by barriers so once I saw traffic on I75 north, I hopped on going south and did a quick turnaround 1/4 mile later at the next exit.
Westbound traffic was quite heavy on 17, the Trans Canada. I stopped a few times for coffee and then to get rid of the coffee, getting to the cottage just after 6pm. It was mostly cruising except for a short distance east of Sudbury as the traffic accumulated and then disappeared at the various exits.
All in all, an easy trip, driving-wise, and a good ride, biking-wise. It was a relief to have so much dry weather on the ride; I only got rained on for the last 3 miles. That wet clothing was still in a plastic bag but has now been run through the wash.
Sandy and I went down to the cove and watched Mike and Eris with their antics and chatted with Gavin and Amanda about Japan. Jason and Lorraine dropped over while we were having dinner, returning a life jacket used by Eris.
Sandy heads to Toronto today and plans to be back on Thursday, I believe. Jason & Lorraine head south tomorrow (Wednesday), avec Kim. I've got catch-up to do on a number of fronts. In two weeks time I'll be returning from yet another ride (North Carolina) and will be repacking for Oz and Israel.
The year is racing by ... Onward !
