The 3rd was relatively quiet, some organizing work for RUSA, of course and then packing for the upcoming 600k. I opted to stay overnight before and during the ride in Tavares.
The 600k is now out of the way, as is the series. Once the results are posted on the RUSA site (these are pre-rides, so it'll be after that actual rides are on the books), and the homolgation numbers back from France, I'll be able to complete my PBP registration. That doesn't mean that I can rest on my laurels (or butt). I have to keep riding, of course and already have a pretty packed schedule.
The first day of the 400k was the tried and true Tim Bol route loop after loop hitting all the hills in the Orlando area going every which way. The second day was a mostly-out-and-back from Tavares to Seville via Paisley. I started rolling a little after 4am on Thursday, finishing around 1:30 am. After a 4 hour night stop, I rolled out again, finishing up before 4pm on Friday.
Thursday's weather was great. Friday's forecast was great but that didn't pan out. A few minutes into my ride I saw a flash, stopped to check the Doppler and saw a huge thundercell bearing down on me. Ugh. I donned my rain jacket and shower cap and rolled on. Soon after, the rain started and turned to heavy. Lightning flashed and thunder boomed ... oh oh ... they were simultaneous. Oh well. I rode on in the downpour and traffic. The time to stop and wait it out had passed.
It was wet until about the turnaround point. At Seville I took off my rain jacket and put on my light jacket, not for the cold but for the dirt. It didn't take long for that to come off and then the long sleeved jersey as it got hot and steamy.
Back at the motel, I used the restroom and gave myself a sort-of sponge bath with paper towels in the large disabled stall to remove some of the sand, changed my clothes and headed home. Along the way before DeLand, I stopped for a 10 minute snooze.
A fine two-day's work. Cassie was happy to see me. She'll be even happier when I get out the boat bag today.
Onward !
