I caved and we are bringing the 4x6 trailer. Bulky Christmas gifts, bulky stuff for the cottage and finally clearing the garage of a couple of items that I wanted to move north, all begged for a pull-behind vs hitch rack or packed to the ceiling.
Ontario got a snow slamming on Monday so the dry, relatively easy drive so far will deteriorate somewhere before the border. Al Nichols will have plowed our driveway but I'll still have a zillion trips from the car down to the house once we arrive. That'll be complicated by the snow that must be shoveled first... Al doesn't do the stairs :).
We are in downtown Wytheville VA right now, Sandy sleeping. We got away at 8am and arrived at 6pm. Traffic was a bear. We've never seen so many trucks. I guess that's what we get for traveling shortly after thanksgiving. Hopefully that will lighten up today.
There were two traffic incidents that Waze anticipated but cleared before we got there, minor slowdowns only. We couldn't use the Charlotte HOV express lanes because I don't think that we qualify as 2 axles. We used the 485 Inner Loop and fared ok.
We ate in the restaurant here in the hotel, not my preference but it was empty. There was one other couple in a big room. Tonight will likely be takeout.
Due to our interpretation of NY and PA requirements and for ease of border crossing, we did get a Covid test before leaving. Five circles in each nostril, self administered, 20 minutes later we had our negative test by email. Scan the QR code on the way in, complete the info on the website, no insurance requirement, no queue ... it was painless. It's a far cry from what we've seen occurring elsewhere.
There's a dark winter ahead. Over 200,000 cases and more than 3,000 deaths yesterday in the US. Hang in, be in the right place at the right time for the vaccine...that may very well determine our 2021 travel schedule.
Today... off to Buffalo. Tomorrow, across the border and into quarantine.
Northward.
