May 20 - Barrie and back

Basically a 12 hour day, we headed to Barrie around 10am and were back just before 10pm.  We went straight to Stef's, had a very short visit and then stopped at a Tim's for a quick bite before getting to Lauren's dance recital.

Lauren was home when we got there but left a few minutes later as a friend was picking her up.  We would not see her again other than in the show.

With the show starting at 2 and likely ending around 4:30, I suggested to Stef that we could go to a restaurant for dinner - Il Buco, the one that she'd recommended to me when we had a group doing a ride a couple of years ago.  It was fabulous then and it was as good last night.  She texted me later at the recital that she'd made reservations for 5pm, which seemed ok ...

It seemed ok until we got to the intermission at 3:35 ... I knew then that we might be tight !  20 minutes later the show restarted, counting down the 43 recital pieces.  Naturally Lauren was in the second last one !  We left mostly through the last piece, just before 5pm, got to the restaurant about 5:10; Stef and Aaron were there a couple of minutes later.

Dinner was a bit rushed but that was my fault for ordering some antipasto for the four of us, but I didn't regret the antipasto.  It was excellent.  Stef and Aaron left at 6:30 to get to the 7pm show; we left a few minutes later.

The recital was wonderful, from the very young almost-toddlers to the teens.  There were quite a few dance styles - jazz, acro, ballet, tap, to name a few - and all ages.  Each number was relatively short and there were a few "intermissions" where one of the organizers / instructors would be on stage with a little skit to fill in a couple of minutes while the troupes were getting organized for the next piece.

Lauren was in three different numbers; the first in Act 1 and the other two in the second Act.  Does a dance recital have Acts ?  I believe that it did, according to the programme.  She had left the house in the dress for the first piece.  We were delighted to be able to see her work.  The last one we saw was two years ago; last year's recital was earlier in May and we missed it.

Stef and Aaron would have had a late night as the show would have ended around 10pm and then there would have been flowers, applause etc.  I'll bet that they didn't get home until closer to 11pm.  Although we had wished that we could have gone together, that would have gotten us home way, way past my bedtime :).

We stopped briefly at Sobey's on the way north, picking up some eggs, Ontario asparagus and an eggplant.  I'd hoped to get something at Canadian Tire, but it was closed.   Starbucks was open later than usual - 9pm vs 8pm - for the long weekend, so I got a cappuccino, of course, after re-fueling.

Knock on wood - the car is behaving itself.  I'm hoping that the issue was simply some contaminant in the fuel from that first on-the-road fillup.  If this was food poisoning, I could probably find out if other people had stomach problems afterwards, but not likely with diesel !  Who knows.

We're getting rain this morning and it's 54F outside.  It's warm enough inside but I'll probably put on a fire later just to be cozy.

Onward !
