Aug 27 - unnecessary adventure, but part of the package

Going back to our villa last night, tight squeeze with another car, I either climbed a short curb or hit a chunk of rock.  I checked it when we stopped and all looked ok.   This morning, heading out on the rough cobbled road, we got part way up the 2 km laneway and there was just too much road noise, although it's hard to tell when all wheels are bouncing.  I stopped briefly and had Sandy check it ... rats ... flat.

There was no choice but to continue, another km to the main road and then a hundred meters before I could pull off into a ristorante parking lot.  Taking quick stock and not wanting to mess up our day, it was time to change the tire.  Out comes the spare and the scissor jack - rats - it's a doughnut.  If this were the last day or two of our vacation, no problem, but we've got two weeks to go.  I can't drive the doughnut that far.

However, I'll deal with that later.  Onward we head to Pompeii, about an hour's drive.  Just before we got there, bingo there's a Goodyear dealer.  What the heck.  It's either that or waste a good part of a day arranging something through Europcar and guess what, I'd have to pay a deductible anyway.  They had an equivalent tire, swapped front to back, he said five minutes and it probably took ten.  I'm impressed.  Away we go, new tire an all, tire issue behind us.  Will Europcar care ?  I don't expect so, but who knows -- that's two weeks away and many kms.

Pompeii was interesting.  From National Geographic articles from way back, I was familiar with the story and the excavation process.  What I didn't expect was the size of the city.  It's huge.  I guess that 20,000 people do take up some space !

We spent less than two hours wandering in the ruins -- it does go on and on.  We hit a cafeteria on the way out ...

As I said on Facebook, for 8 Euros, roasted and grilled veggies, I'm moving to Italy !

We wanted to do some exploring, so we drove from there to Salerno and then back to our villa in Massa Lubrense.  Roughly 50 kms from Salerno, the coastal road time was estimated at about 40 minutes and took us, oh, about 3 hours +.  I was exhausted from the tight squeezes, mirrors coming within 1 cm of each other.

Tonight we're planning on eating at the restaurant that we missed on our arrival day.  We know where it is now :).
