Nov 27 - an important life lesson

Don't sneeze when you're frothing milk with the espresso/cappuccino maker.  What a mess.

Speaking of messes, even though I did get out for a ride, the day was consumed by RUSA insurance or rather the possible lack thereof.  We always get our renewal a couple of days before it's due, but this year, because we're being sued for a rider's death in the summer, we're not at all certain that we'll get a renewal offer.  Our insurance ends 11/30 11:59 pm.  You'd think that by now we would know whether or not an offer is pending but we can't get anything out of the company or rather the agent can't.

We're a unique beast, sort-of an association, an umbrella over the local clubs and then again, sort-of a bike club, since Permanents are a national, not regional, concept.  The  trouble with Perms is that insurance co's see them as not much different from Just Riding Around.

So yesterday, Tuesday, we had to pull the trigger on letting the membership know that we don't have insurance as of 11:59 pm Friday.  All those rides scheduled for this coming weekend ?  No problem; our insurance person has an alternate arrangement in place.  All those riders planning on doing a Perm this weekend, including those who have traveled to other States ?  Big Issue.  No coverage.  Perm program has been suspended until we sort this out.

So what ?  Well, people are intent on their awards, monthly rides, cumulative totals for the year and lifetime, and many of these awards are awarded based on doing Perms, especially during the winter when you have to watch the weather to find those few hours where it's warm enough to get out there for a dozen hours.  Fallback arrangements, a "free pass", other possibilities - all were discussed on our impromptu Board call last night as well as answers to the multitude of questions that flow in once you send an email to 3200 people.

Ugh.  We could get our offer today, Wednesday; that was the timeframe last year.  Will we get an offer ?  I wish that I knew.  If we do get an offer, how much will it cost us ?  That's the (hopefully not !) million $ question.

So we wait, with a worm on our tongue.  A colleague in Calgary used to say that instead of "baited breath".  The imagery isn't good.

In the meantime, I'm also dealing with Randonneurs Ontario policy documents ... dang.

It's just a bike ride ... it's just a bike ride ... it's just a bike ride ... are we having fun yet ?
