Nov 12-14 - fussing around

I have made so many trips to Home Depot, spending more on gas than on goods !

We've had a problem with our kitchen sliders in that a strong east wind pushing rain against them causes water to come in at the base of the doors, actually just the one door; not a lot but wets the 3x5 carpet there.  Both the vertical and under-the-door seals were damaged and I've replaced both.  The vertical one is standard; the under-door is something that's unique to this manufacturer, I guess, so I've used a substitute.  So far so good - some hosing down hasn't produced a leak.  Now I need a storm !

There's a temporary solution, of course, which is pulling the shutters closed.  Every other door effectively has a large overhang and isn't a problem.  Next up, some caulking.

I've also been fussing with RUSA insurance.  Ugh.  The current policy runs out at the end of Dec 2 and our agent is working on a solution.  I've been chasing temporary arrangements to keep us in business if there's a gap.  It's unclear what a solution might look like - price and structure - but it might change how we handle different types of rides.  Ugh.

What else ... testing out thermostat and relay for heating up north, staring at the X5 snow tires and postponing installation (but running out of time !); not riding.  It was supposed to rain yesterday but didn't.  It's about to rain today.  I should have gone.  I'll ride on the weekend and we are thinking of, planning on, going to Epcot on Monday.  Wednesday we leave for Hemmingford after Sandy has an eye appointment in DeLand.  It may be time to deal with her cataracts.

I visited the local location of Florida Public Health yesterday, trying to figure out what we need to do vis-a-vis immunizations for Thailand.  Most of our shots are up-to-date but it looks like we need Typhoid, a new one - Japanese Encephalitis (JE), Malaria meds of course and, this is the biggie, rabies.  Rabies is a series of three shots taken at days 1, 7 and 21-28.  The problem is our Christmas travels.  What I was trying to sort out yesterday is whether that 28 could be 35.  It looks like that should be ok.  The clinic doesn't do JE, we'll have to go elsewhere for that, a for-profit clinic in Orlando.  Malaria and JE are mosquito borne.  Rabies, of course, is animals including bats and recommended if you're going to do any "adventure travel".  The other trouble with the rabies series is the cost.  It's almost as expensive as our air fare.  However, if you're bitten by an animal with rabies (and that's common in Thailand) and you can't get treatment, you die.  Period.  Dogs, rabid or not, love chasing bicycles.  Sandy is planning on hiking.  It's questionable whether she needs it but we might as well do this together.

Sandy spotted on Facebook yesterday that Bill Tetz had posted that his father and our good friend, Frank, might have pancreatic cancer.  He's been tested and tested and that seems to be the prognosis.  From exchanges with Bill yesterday, Frank will be home today so I'll give him a call.  Ugh ugh ugh.  Frank is the one who hired me into Towers Perrin and then later, I became his boss, just like me hiring Bob Lopes and then he became my boss.  Frank's dad lived to 100; I'm going to tell him off !  We have visited with Frank and Nancy a number of times over the years and they stayed with us for a week a few years ago here in Florida.  Wonderful people ... I've been thinking of giving Frank a call but didn't expect that he would be ill.  Ugh.

Onward ...
